About our club
BPW Coffs Harbour is a great way for local women to meet, network and socialise. A wide range of women working in the professions, business and industry have been members during the 40 years of the Club’s existence.
The Club has been proactive in women’s affairs in the community, with a strong focus on professional and personal development. We continue to deliver programs for women, and in 2010-2011 organised a well attended Financial Management Series for Women (super, property, tax), and a Women’s Matters Series on legal, insurance and tax matters using local business women speakers.
We were also involved in facilitating a White Ribbon Day Event to highlight the prevention of violence against women. One of our annual activities is to award a Scholarship to a local mature-aged woman studying at tertiary level, who has overcome adversity.
Last year after our AGM we decided to be more social and are meeting at restaurants around the city each month and organising the affairs of the world from there. Why not come and join us?
Once a year in September we host an ‘Unhappy Hour’ on Equal Pay Day. Did you know Australian women earn 17% less than men in a similar position? That's when we cry into our wine, and attempt to bring everyone’s attention to the discrepancy.
The members of BPW Coffs Harbour have a reputation for being committed, proactive, friendly, professional, smart...and lots of fun. Our members often go to Regional, National and International Conferences and continue to have a strong interest in international affairs, donating to the Project 5-O La Paz Nursing Home in Mexico, to a micro-loan program in Malawi, and preparing resolutions for discussion and approval at the annual BPW Australia National Conference.
On November 8th we inducted Wendy Martin as a Life Member. Wendy is in her 25th year of membership of BPW Coffs Harbour, and has made a huge contribution over the years to many worthwhile BPW projects. As an individual Wendy has also run Be Creative by the Sea retreats for quilters for the past 10 years, and has raised over $40,000 for Breast Cancer Research. We salute you Wendy!
Coming up on April 28 are our 40th Birthday celebrations. We would like all former members to contact us with their memories, and join us on the night for a birthday to remember.
On International Night in February, Guest Speaker Marie LoCascio entertained us with her stories of life in the male-dominated offices of Japan, and her studies in France. Marie spoke about the importance of not underestimating cultural differences across the globe in our efforts to see women become more empowered. This was accompanied by a ver interesting slide show.
