About our club
The 40 year old BPW Busselton club consists of a group of 19 women, a number of whom are retired. Non retired members are involved in electrical sales, reception, small business, self employment, resort business and dental nurse. Retired members have in their day been teacher, pharmacist, nurse, receptionist, farmers. A number of members left when their husbands retired and went travelling. One of our members, Maidie Brockman, is the current BPW WA Woman of the Year and the Division Membership Officer. The club has provided two state presidents and a state treasurer in the past.
Our annual focus is on running a petticoat lane Stall and big quiz night to raise $2,000 towards out Education Awards, which consist of 1 X $1,000 award for a high school female student, and 1 X $1,000 for a woman returning to tertiary study. These two awards are met with the sponsorship of another two for the same amount by Dianne Laurance of Laurance Wines. We have been running these awards for a number of years now and our recipients have had considerable success to report to us.
The club also runs a Mentoring Afternoon for Year 10 students from all of our high schools ever two years. Lions helps by supplying the barbecue lunch and students (male and female) are bussed into a central auditorium, usually at one of the schools, where we run groups and guest speakers all afternoon looking at current topics. The last one was looking at the topic of resilience, the one before that on career choices.
Spotlight
The Spotlight is on our latest club project, to work towards getting a women’s refuge set up in Busselton. We have had a very satisfactory meeting with stakeholders and are currently following up with the Shire and local MP’s regarding a feasibility study and availability of a house. We are very excited about this project and the positiveness with which it has been received locally.
